The EcoPro Group is speeding up efforts to establish a value chain for secondary battery materials in Pohang, with EcoPro EM at the forefront.
EcoPro EM* held a ceremony to mark the completion of the CAM7 plant, which began construction in October last year, at the Eco Battery Pohang Campus** in Yeongilman (Yeongil Bay) 4th General Industrial Complex in Pohang and has started operating the new plant. The event was attended by Gyeongsangbuk-do Deputy Governor for Economic Affairs Lee Dal-hee, EcoPro CEO Lee Dong-che, Samsung SDI CEO Choi Yoon-ho, Pohang City Deputy Mayor Lee Jang-sik, provincial members, and about 200 resident representatives.

Built on a 61,020 m2 site in Yeongilman 4th General Industrial Complex, the CAM7 plant can produce 54,000 t of high-nickel cathode materials annually (enough to make 600,000 electric vehicles). In addition, the CAM6 plant, completed in October last year, has an annual production capacity of 36,000 t (enough for 400,000 electric vehicles). In total, EcoPro EM can produce 90,000 t of cathode materials, sufficient to create 1 million electric vehicles.
High-nickel cathode materials (with nickel content of 80% or higher) require advanced technology and have higher nickel content than general cathode materials (with nickel content of 50%). A higher proportion of nickel in cathode materials results in higher energy density in the batteries, enabling a longer driving range per charge for electric vehicles. In addition, a higher proportion of nickel in cathode materials can lower the price of electric vehicles by reducing the proportion of cobalt, whose price has been rising sharply.
EcoPro started investing in Pohang in 2018 and is building a virtuous cycle business model for batteries by integrating its flagship EcoPro BM (specializing in cathode materials), EcoPro Innovation (producing lithium hydroxide), EcoPro AP (developing high-purity oxygen and nitrogen), EcoPro Materials (producing cathode material precursors), EcoPro EM (producing cathode materials), and EcoPro CNG (specializing in battery recycling) to enable the extraction of materials required for battery production and the production of cathode, a core material for secondary batteries, in one place.
Meanwhile, Gyeongsangbuk-do aims to attract a global innovation zone as the Pohang Special Regulation-Free Zone for Next-Generation Battery Recycling was selected as an excellent special zone for three consecutive years—the first among 29 special zones nationwide—d on its successes in attracting large-scale projects thus far, including those involving the EcoPro Group, POSCO Chemical (producing cathode and anode materials), GS E&C (specializing in recycling), and LG BCM (producing cathode materials, d in Gumi).
“Thanks to EcoPro’s bold investment decision and the full support of the local government, the value chain for secondary battery materials has been completed in Pohang,” said Lee Dal-hee, Deputy Governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do for Economic Affairs, adding, “Gyeongsangbuk-do will actively support Pohang so that it can establish itself as a key for the global secondary battery material industry and lead the global used battery market by pioneering international standards in the recycling field.”
