The Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial government announced that it had no newly ed local cases of COVID-19 patients for the first time in 51 days since the first COVID-19 case was ed in Gyeongsangbuk-do on February 19. As of 00:00 on April 9, 2020, the total number of ed COVID-19 cases within the province stood at 1,279 patients. Although one patient traveling in from overseas tested positive for COVID-19 on the day, in terms of local transmission, Gyeongsangbuk-do reported no new cases. Officials believe this will encourage people across the province to redouble their efforts in beating the COVID-19 pandemic. To prevent the local spread of COVID-19 and treat ed patients within its jurisdiction, The Gyeongsangbuk-do government-designated medical centers in Pohang, Gimcheon, and Andong as COVID-19 treatment centers on February 24. The three medical centers were tasked with the in-patient treatment of patients in severe to critical condition. The provincial government also converted three additional facilities into daily treatment centers (the Academy of Humanistic Spirit, Gyeongsangbuk-do Fire Academy, and Daemyeong Resort Cheongsong) to ensure a stable supply of hospital beds in anticipation of a mass outbreak of new COVID-19 patients. Meanwhile, patients and employees at facilities exposed to greater risk of mass infection, including nursing homes, nursing hospitals, mental hospitals, etc., were tested ahead of other potential patients (exhausting testing or sample testing) as a precaution, and religious, sporting, entertainment establishments, and other public venues are participating in a strict social distancing campaign, which is expected to last until April 19. With these measures, Gyeongsangbuk-do is ramping up its efforts to completely eradicate COVID-19. With European countries, and countless other nations aro the world reporting mass outbreaks of COVID-19 on a daily basis, Gyeongsangbuk-do has decided to test all travelers entering the province from overseas to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in local communities. As of April 9, the provincial government has ed 20 COVID-19 patients entering Gyeongsangbuk-do from overseas, and it is supervising 1,736 people who are er self-quarantine.
With the COVID-19 pandemic passing its 50th day, there have been some cases of patients who were declared “fully cured” being re-ed as COVID-19 patients (19 cases). The Gyeongsangbuk-do government is working with the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to complete an epidemiological investigation of these reed patients. In the meantime, the provincial government is monitoring “fully cured” patients for an additional week to prevent the relapse of COVID-19. An official with the quarantine authority at Gyeongsangbuk-do stated, “The fact that we’ve had no new local cases of COVID-19 is very significant. We hope that the sacrifices we made during this 50-day struggle against COVID-19 can give people more hope, and serve as a turning point in completely eradicating COVID-19.” He added, “To prevent the spread of COVID-19, we urge employees working at mass facilities exposed to significant risk of infections to comply with COVID-19-related rules, we urge those who are self-quarantined to follow self-quarantine guidelines at all times, and we urge all Gyeongsangbuk-do residents to actively cooperate with the social distancing measures we have in place at the moment.”
