The passionate and patriotic cries from Taekwondo athletes calling for the defense of Dokdo Island as sovereign territory of Korea echoed across the world as Gyeongsangbuk-do celebrated Korea’s 73rd anniversary of independence.
On the 14th and 15th of August, the Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Government, Ulleung-gun, and the World Taekwondo Headquarters co-hosted a special Taekwondo perance in Ulleungdo and Dokdo Islands er the supervision of the Korea MICE Promotion Foation.
The Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Government designed the event to express its firm commitment towards defending Dokdo Island as sovereign territory of Korea. It showcased a Taekwondo program inspired by the “Hwarang Spirit,” which led more than 80 million Taekwondo athletes across 232 countries aro the world to resolutely declare that Dokdo Island is unequivocally the territory of Korea.
At an event on the eve of National Liberation Day (August 14), Gyeongsangbuk-do hosted a commemorative perance titled, “Dokdo Island belongs to Korea! Let’s protect it with our traditional martial arts, Taekwondo” at Dodonghang Port on Ulleungdo Island. The event also included a kite-flying program, Taekwondo and power breaking demonstrations by 70 Taekwondo athletes, a Taekwondo perance by a children’s Taekwondo group, and a flash mob featuring members of the audience. Overall, the event was a resoing success, earning praise from both the local Ulleungdo residents and tourists visiting the island.
On Liberation Day (August 15), Gyeongsangbuk-do pered a commemorative program for the 73rd anniversary of Korea’s independence on Dokdo Island, which was the first victim to fall at the hands of Japan’s imperial ambitions.
With more than 100 people in attendance, including members of the World Taekwondo Headquarters Demonstration Team, the Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do Taekwondo Demonstration Team, and a special group of observers, the event held at the dock at Dokdo Island showcased the willingness to protect Dokdo as sovereign territory of Korea with an official commemorative event and Taekwondo perances by the Taekwondo demonstration teams.
Furthermore, the event featured a perance using the Dokdo flag and the Taegeukgi (national flag of Korea), and a Dokdo flash mob to use Taekwondo, the traditional martial arts of Korea, as well as visitors to Ulleungdo in letting the world know that Dokdo belongs to Korea.
Won Chang-ho, Director of the ision of Dokdo Maritime Policies, said, “I think it was very meaningful in that we were able to express our will and determination to protect Dokdo, which is an important symbol for the Korean people, as our sovereign territory using Taekwondo on Liberation Day.”
He added, “Moving forward, we will do our best to promote the fact that ‘Dokdo belongs to Korea’ together with 80 million Taekwondo athletes practicing our nation’s traditional martial arts, Taekwondo.”
