At 14:00 on September 10 (Thu), the Gyeongsangbuk-do (Provincial Governor: Lee Cheol-Woo) government announced that the Gaya Tumuli - which features seven tumuli in total, including the Goryeong Jisan-dong Tumuli - was ed as an eligible candidate for the World Heritage List nominations process at a sub-committee meeting for World Heritage hosted by the Cultural Heritage Administration. This latest development means that the Gaya Tumuli has passed the final phase of the domestic application process for its application as a UNESCO World Heritage.
The Gaya Tumuli is a collection of seven inidual heritage sites that best exhibit the tribal age of the Korean peninsula prior to the ation of ancient states. In particular, it offers a into the governing system and burial culture of the tribal s of Gaya (1st ~ 6th century C.E.).
The seven tumuli ed as final candidates are: ▶ Goryeong Jisan-dong Tumuli (Historic Site No. 79); ▶ Gimhae Daeseong-dong Tumuli (Historic Site No. 341); ▶ Haman Malisan Tumuli (Historic Site No. 515); ▶ Hapcheon Okjeon Tumuli (Historic Site No. 326); ▶ Goseong Songhak-dong Tumuli (Historic Site No. 119); ▶ Changnyeong Gyo-dong and Songhyeon-dong Tumuli (Historic Site No. 514); and ▶ Namwon Yugok-ri and Durak-ri Tumuli (Historic Site No. 542). Together these Tumuli offer invaluable all ination related to the growth and development of Gaya.
The Gaya Tumuli was ed for the final nomination application via a deliberation process at the Cultural Heritage Administration. The final English draft of the application will be submitted to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre by the end of January next year. The World Heritage Committee will then make its final decision whether to inscribe the Gaya Tumuli as a World Heritage or not in 2022 after a series of exhaustive on-site investigations and uations by UNESCO ICOMOS.
Kim Sang-cheol, head of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Culture, Tourism and Sports Bureau, said, “We are glad the domestic deliberation process is over, but the nomination will become much more challenging as we proceed with the application. For instance, we will have to provide all the data and ination UNESCO asks for, and host field investigations and uations moving forward. To help the Gaya Tumuli make the UNESCO World Heritage list, the three provinces (Jeollabuk-do, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Gyeongsangnam-do) will collaborate together and invest significant human and financial resources in the necessary areas.”
