Gyeongsangbuk-do Province to raise public awareness with comprehensively planned programs, including the Digital Dokdo Archive Agreement - - The Provincial Government also to host academic conferences, photo exhibitions, memorial stamps, etc. to reinforce Korea’s sovereignty over Dokdo Island -
In a recent announcement, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and the Dokdo Foation (Chairman: Lee Cheol-Woo) unveiled its plans to celebrate “Dokdo Month” (the month of October) and commemorate the 120th anniversary of Korean Empire Royal Edict no. 41, which declared Ulleungdo and Dokdo as the sovereign territory of Korea, with a variety of programs and events.
Most notably, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province said it will work with the National Library of Korea to preserve data on Dokdo Island. To that end, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, the National Library of Korea, and the municipal government of Ulleung-gun plan to host a signing ceremony for the “Digital Dokdo Archive Agreement” at the National Library of Korea on October 13, and start collecting and digitizing a wide range of Dokdo-related resources, such as old maps scattered across the country, in the new Digital Dokdo Archive.
Meanwhile, an academic event sponsored by Gyeongsangbuk-do Province will get er way between October 21 and 23. On October 21, the Dokdo Foation will host the “Seminar on Promoting the Management of Protected Marine Organisms in Ulleungdo and Dokdo Islands” at the POSTECH International Pavilion. Then, on October 22, the Dokdo Institute at Yeungnam University will host the “Seminar on Promoting the Management of Protected Marine Organisms in Ulleungdo and Dokdo Islands” at the University’s Law Library.
On October 23, the Research Institute for Ulleungdo and Dokdo at Kyungpook National University will host the “International Academic Symposium on Marine Ecology and Island Biology” on the University campus to explore solutions to help preserve Dokdo’s environment and marine ecology. At the end of October, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province will collaborate with the Daegu Haany University to co-host a session on the “Discussion of the Life and Achievements of An Yong-bok, the Guardian of Dokdo.”
In addition to these seminars and discussion sessions, the Provincial Government is also preparing a variety of other events, including the Dokdo Photo Exhibition and Dokdo Product Biz Fair, to raise the public’s interest in Dokdo.
For a period of 12 days from October 19 to 30, the Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Library will hold the “Dokdo Photo Exhibition by Senior Local Photographer Kim Jae-do” at its exhibition hall. On October 24, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province will invite representatives of private organizations across the Province to participate in the “Dokdo Private Organization Workshop” and discuss strategies or collaborative programs to help protect Dokdo Island. The Provincial Government also plans on releasing the results of its project to create a data of old maps related to Dokdo via on/offline channels.
On November 7, Gyeongsangbuk-do will host the “2nd Dokdo Product Biz Fair” aimed at showcasing and selling products related to Dokdo, such as textbooks, stationery, and apparel, through online and offline plats at the Sanghwa Garden at Suseong Lake, Daegu. With the Biz Fair, the Provincial Government will look to help small businesses suffering from the effects of COVID-19, and give manufacturers a chance to mass-produce and commercialize Dokdo-related products.
Gyeongsangbuk-do Province expects to kick start a number of new initiatives as well. The Dokdo Foation will produce stamps commemorating the 120th anniversary of the Korean Empire Royal Edict no. 41, and distribute them to academic institutions overseas offering education for overseas Koreans or to Dokdo-related organizations. These stamps will help spread awareness internationally that Dokdo is the sovereign territory of Korea.
Furthermore, given the difficulty in executing overseas projects and business due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province will manufacture Dokdo-themed masks featuring images of the Dokdo Island and the phrase “Dokdo of Korea,” and send them to relevant organizations in the United States, Japan, and Korea.
Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and the Dokdo Foation are planning to make preparations in full compliance with government guidelines required at each COVID-19 quarantine and social distancing level at each event venue (e.g. instituting mask-wearing mandates, providing hand sanitizers, checking visitors’ temperature for fever, and maintaining social distancing) to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Kim Seong-hak, Head of the Maritime and Fishery Bureau at Gyeongsangbuk-do, said, “This year marks the 120th anniversary of Royal Edict no. 41 by the Korean Empire. The Provincial Government is looking to take the lead in terms of creating a data that can help raise international awareness of the fact that Dokdo is the peaceful and sovereign territory of Korea. Given the set of circumstances we are facing er the COVID-19 pandemic, we plan to host a number of different events and academic symposiums we feel that are absolutely necessary in strengthening our sovereign right over Dokdo Island.”
