Remove Dokdo Island from the Map of Japan on the official Tokyo Olympic Games website!
- Gyeongsangbuk-do delivers letter and voices its strong protest to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) -
Gyeongsangbuk-do strongly protested, including a letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) requesting the IOC to delete Dokdo Island - a sovereign territory of the Republic of
Korea - labeled by the Japanese Government in a way to make the Island appear a part of Japan’s sovereign territory on its official Tokyo Olympic website.
In its letter of protest, Gyeongsangbuk-do stated, “Dokdo Island is, historically, geographically, and internationally, the sovereign territory of the Republic of Korea.” It added, “Marking Dokdo Island as a Japanese territory is an act that violates the spirit of the Olympic Games, which prohibits the expression of political, religious or racial views of any kind at the Olympics,” condemning the regrettable decision by the Japanese Government.
Moreover, Gyeongsangbuk-do urged the IOC to act as a mediator against the actions of the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee that undermined the spirit of the Olympic Games, which is dedicated to delivering world peace and love for humanity through sports. The Governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do clearly stated that he, along with united support from all 3 million of the Province’s residents, will respond decisively to any provocations by Japan to compromise the sovereignty of Dokdo Island.

Dear Mr. Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC),
Please allow me to express my respect and gratitude towards your dedication and determination to convene different people from around the world for a true festival of peace and harmony under such difficult circumstances. Furthermore, I sincerely wish you and the IOC great success at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
As Governor of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, who manages and has jurisdiction over Dokdo Island of the Republic of Korea, I am hereby sending you a letter on behalf of all three million of Gyeongsangbuk-do’s residents regarding the regrettable decision by the Tokyo Olympic/Paralympic Games Organizing Committee to include Dokdo Island on its map of Japan released on the official Tokyo Olympic Games website.
Specifically, I am requesting you and the IOC to arbitrate on the matter of deleting Dokdo Island from said map available on the Tokyo Olympic Games website altogether.
As stated in the Olympic Charter, the expression of political, religious, or racial views and opinions of any kind at the Olympics Games is strictly prohibited.
However, during the build-up of the Tokyo Olympic Games scheduled for July, Japan has posted on the official website of the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee a map of the Olympic torch relay indicating Dokdo Island, an island historically, geographically, and under international law recognized as a sovereign territory of the Republic of Korea, in a way that makes it appear a territory of Japan. Exacerbating the matter, the Japanese Government has repeatedly rejected requests from the Korean Government to delete Dokdo Island from its map, further aggravating the Korean people.
Japan’s use of sports for political purposes is undermining the Olympic spirit of delivering world peace. The IOC’s stance on this matter, which seems to be condoning Japan’s actions, is difficult to understand. Ahead of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games, the Pyeongchang Olympic Organizing Committee of the Republic of Korea accepted the IOC’s recommendation and used a Korean Peninsula flag that excluded Dokdo Island.
As President of the International Olympic Committee,I urge you and the IOC to actively mediate the actions of the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee undermining the spirit of the Olympic Games to help it deliver on its promise of world harmony, peace, and love for humanity through sports.
In the name of the three million Gyeongsangbuk-do residents, I ask the IOC to take active measures to save the Tokyo Olympic Games from becoming a vessel of political propaganda. I earnestly hope the Olympic Games can remain a place of harmony for people around the world, not in name only, but in the true sense of its purpose. Thank you.
