Gyeongsangbuk-do helping local culture grow with its “Culture Day” programs
- Gyeongsangbuk-do selects two si/gun districts as winners of the “Culture Day with Local Residents” contest -

On May 12, Gyeongsangbuk-do its decision to select two si/gun districts as winners of its “Culture Day with Local Residents” contest.
The last Wednesday of each month is “Culture Day” in Gyeongsangbuk-do, which is why the Provincial Government offers a variety of cultural programs in which its citizens can participate in.
Gyeongsangbuk-do held the Culture Day with Local Residents contest to expand the range of cultural activities available for its local residents, and help boost engagement in the Province’s policies using special programs designed specifically for Culture Day.
Six si/gun districts out of 23 si/gun districts across the Province applied to the contest (six total applications). Of the six applications, two projects were selected upon final deliberation by the Provincial Government. These two projects are expected to receive financial support of up to KRW 32.5 million from Gyeongsangbuk-do.
One of the two selected projects was the “Mobile Concert on Culture Day” from Andong-si. The Mobile Concert on Culture Day program will offer opportunities for cultural experiences via various performance programs for elementary school students and parents in towns and villages with poor geographical access to cultural programs and facilities, and opportunities for local artists to find respite from hardships caused by COVID-19 and build their artistic talents.
The other project selected by Gyeongsangbuk-do was Gyeongju-si’s “Culture Day with Local Residents (Communicating with Culture).” The Culture Day with Local Residents (Communicating with Culture) program plans to offer six programs, mostly at the Gyeongju Arts Center during the last week of each month. These six programs - the Gyeongju Urban Sketch, Gyeongju Story, Communicating with My Body, Baby Stroller Concert, Culture Do Dream, and @Home Culture Kit, etc. - will help improve the quality of life for local residents and provide a venue for local artists to showcase their talent.
Also, Gyeongsangbuk-do was selected as an exemplary municipal government by the national government in implementing the Culture Day initiative in 2021.
This selection is in recognition of the diverse range of cultural policies offered by the Gyeongsangbuk-do Government aimed at “healing” people battered and bruised by the COVID-19 pandemic with cultural activities available close to home and in everyday life settings.
Kim Sang-cheol, Director of the Culture, Tourism, and Sports Bureau at Gyeongsangbuk-do, said, “We have a lot of locals and artists here in Gyeongsangbuk-do growing weary over the COVID-19 pandemic. But we hope we can turn to cultural activities and find the wisdom to get through these tough times.”
Kim added, “We will continue to promote various cultural initiatives, including the Culture Day program, to provide performance opportunities to multiple artists in regions hard hit by COVID-19, and to improve the quality of life for our local residents using the power of culture.”
