Gyeongsangbuk-do Promoting the Global Innovation GREAT Project for the Northern Region - Gyeongsangbuk-do and 11 Cities and Counties Providing a Forum for the Survival of the the Northern Region - Suggesting Various Policies such as the 4th Industrial Revolution, Super-aged, 21-century Metropolitan Competition et al
Gyeongsangbuk-do (“Gyeongbuk”) held a video conference on February 2 (Tue.) to prepare the development strategy for its northern region.
More than 50 people including senior researchers from Gyeongbuk, 11 cities and counties, and Daegu Gyeongbuk Development Institute have suggested and discussed policies in order to prepare the development strategy for the northern region where new wind is blowing with the relocation of the new Provincial Government Building in 2016 and the decision to relocate the integrated new airport.
The northern region of Gyeongbuk forms a Confucian cultural sphere along with Baekdudaegan Mountain Range and clean natural environment, recently has had a resident population of more than 20 thousand residents of the Provincial Office new town, and is taking an opportunity of new leaf forward as the relocation of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk integrated new airport to Gunwi and Uiseong area has been confirmed.
In addition, with establishment of KTX Andong Station, the Central Inland High-speed Railway, and the double track railroad project of the Central Line, all of which make it closer to the metropolitan area, Chungcheong area, and Gangwon area, the northern region can play a leading role in the balanced national development as a link between the central and southern regions of Korea.
Kim Yong-hyeon, a research fellow at Daegu Gyeongbuk Development Institute who announced the basic plan (draft), said, “We have included the way to strengthen the competitive power of the northern region of Gyeongbuk in ‘the GREAT Project for the Northern Region’based on the analysis of current situation in the northern region of Gyseongsangbuk-do and a survey.” in his explanation.
According to the analysis results of the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade, the competitive edge of the northern region remains in the middle, with an average of 11.5 among 23 cities and counties in Gyeongbuk. However, its strengths include the geopolitical and geoeconomic location connecting the metropolitan area and the southern area, and possession of various historical, cultural and tourism resources as well as advantage for promoting specialized industries. Also, the analyzed opportunity factors included the improvement of metropolitan transportation network with the metropolitan area, the relocation of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk integrated new airport, and the possession of ultra-wide potential power such as inland east and west et al.
In addition, as it is anticipated that the tourism trend in the post COVID19 and AI era will be drastically changed into small-scale forest recreation, curing and healing for families and friends, the northern region of Gyeongbuk, which has historical culture and clean resources, is attracting attention, thereby requiring the provincial government of Gyeongbuk to adopt confrontation strategy.
Research fellow Kim has proposed 24 projects in four major fields including ▶the life industry belt, ▶the tourism and cultural leisure belt, ▶the innovation industry belt, and ▶the regional SOC conneciton with the vision of Koreas next-generation cultural tourism + industrial hub in the basic plan (draft) of the Global Innovation GREAT Project for the Northern Region.
In addition, saying that, in order to make the project successful, ▶Preparation of a development system for the northern region of Gyeongbuk ▶Provision of development funds for the northern region must be supported, he proposed to jointly establish the basic plan for development of the northern region and strengthen the status of the Agreement of the Northern Administrative Council.
Research fellow Kim has forcefully said, “The northern region of Gyeongbuk can play a role as a linker, intermediary, and facilitator between the southern and central economic regions of the Korean peninsula. Projects must be materialized through innovative growth, network construction, and regional cooperation.” and “With the development of the northern region, a balanced development in which the entire Gyeongbuk is coexisting must be achieved.”
Meanwhile, Lee Gyeong-gon, the Director General for Policy Planning of Gyeongsangbuk-do who presided over the meeting today, said, “Today’s video conference is a venue for listening to opinions in the site of cities and counties in order to prepare a feasible policy. We will gather our capabilities together with cities and counties for the balanced development of Gyeongbuk and its realization on the basis of ‘the 5th Comprehensive Plans for Construction in the National Territory.”
