Ulleungdo, a lonely island in the East Sea. Now, you can fly over the island for a closer look! - Gyeongsangbuk-do charters a non-landing flight over Ulleungdo to promote the success of the Daegu-Gyeongsangbuk-do New Airport and the new Ulleung Airport -
Just in time for the 76th Liberation Day on August 15, Gyeongsangbuk-do chartered a non-landing flight from Daegu to Ulleungdo (Dokdo) to celebrate the 1st anniversary of Gyeongsangbuk-do selecting a new location for the Daegu-Gyeognsangbuk-do New Airport, and to promote the success of the new Ulleung Airport. As part of the event, a chartered flight departed from the Daegu Airport, flew along the east coast, then headed to Ulleungdo and Dokdo.
Gyeongsangbuk-do offered two flights - at 08:15 and 14:45 - using a 50-seater airliner operated by Hi Air, the only regional airline company in Korea.
More than passengers were selected from the Heritage of Korean Independence, other Dokdo-related organizations, and the general public who submitted their drawings of Ulleungdo and Dokdo via their personal accounts on various social networking services.
Selected passengers were given a special opportunity to see Ulleungdo and Dokdo (it took just one hour from Daegu Airport), and received unique souvenirs such as canisters containing air from Dokdo as well as Dokdo honorary resident ID cards.
To commemorate the 76th Liberation Day, Gyeongsangbuk-do also prepared an educational program to share the importance of the history and nature of Dokdo using materials from the Dokdo History Classroom (“Dokdo Kit”). The Classroom featured historical content produced by the Independence Hall of Korea to reiterate the significance of Liberation Day.
Kim XXXX, who took the flight to Ulleungdo, said, “I am very happy to participate in this fly-over event. I saw Ulleungdo and Dokdo from the sky.” He added, “It was a great opportunity to share the true meaning of Liberation Day with my children who are about to start school by flying over Ulleungdo and Dokdo, which stand at the easternmost point of our country.”
Lee Dong-il, Governor of the Heritage of Korean Independence’s local chapter, said, “Getting a chance to fly to Ulleungdo and Dokdo, which I really have been wanting to go for a while, and celebrating the 76th Liberation Day is such a moving experience. I’m also thrilled at the fact that we can visit Ulleungdo, a lonely island in the East Sea, in just one hour. It’s overwhelming, and I definitely hope we can do more to protect our island of Dokdo.”
Choi Hyeok-jun, Head of the Integrated New Airport Promotion Team at Gyeongsangbuk-do, who hosted this fly-over event, said, “This was the first time anyone had flown over to Ulleungdo and Dokdo from Daegu Airport. The fact that so many people were interested in the event makes me believe that it was much more meaningful than what we had hoped for.” He added, “We will do our best to build the Daegu-Gyeongsangbuk-do New Airport and Ulleung Airport successfully in the near future.”
With the site for the New Airport confirmed on August 28, 2020, the Daegu-Gyeongsangbuk-do New Airport project is in its planning phase. The Daegu Metropolitan Government has commissioned a master plan for the New Airport, the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs has commissioned a feasibility assessment of a civilian airport in the region, and a master plan for a “new town” and transportation network near the New Airport in Gyeongsangbuk-do is in the works. The New Airport is expected to open sometime in 2028.
Meanwhile, construction for the Ulleung Airport began in November 2020, backed by KRW 660 billion from the Korean government. A tentative opening date has been set for 2025. Once the Airport is open, Ulleungdo will be just an hour or so away from other inland cities, giving the island a boost, especially in terms of tourism.
