Japan must apologize for its illegal claims over Dokdo Island and immediately cease all provocations
- Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-Woo, issues a statement condemning the absurd remarks made by the Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs -
On January 17 (Mon), Gyeongsangbuk-do issued a statement strongly protesting the baseless remarks made by the Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs who claimed Japan’s sovereignty over Dokdo Island. In its statement, Gyeongsangbuk-do demanded the Japanese government to apologize and immediately cease its absurd contention over the sovereignty of Dokdo Island, which it continues to do every year.
Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Hayashi Yoshimasa said in a speech on Japan’s foreign affairs at a regular session of the National Assembly that began on January 17 that Dokdo Island, a rightful territory of the Republic of Korea, “Belongs to Japan not only historically, but also under international law.” He added, “Based upon this position, we will be resolute in our response on this matter.” This marks the ninth consecutive year (since 2014) the Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs has claimed Japan’s sovereignty over Dokdo Island in a foreign policy speech.
In response, Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-Woo issued a statement on January 17 declaring,
“I demand the Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs to stop his blatant attempts to distort history and cease all provocations over Dokdo Island, which Japan has been doing for the past nine years. As the Governor in charge of protecting Dokdo, and on behalf of the three million Gyeongsangbuk-do residents, I am determined to protect the Island from any and all provocations by Japan.”
The Governor added, “While emphasizing the importance of its friendship and cooperation with Korea, Japan has continued to engage in treacherous conduct by constantly showing its ambitions to invade Dokdo instead of showing any remorse or reflecting on its attempts to distort history. I demand a genuine apology from Japan, and urge it to reflect on its past transgressions. In doing so, it must become a willing participant in maintaining international order and world peace.
Statement of Condemnation
regarding the remarks of the Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs
1. In response to the baseless claims of Japan’s sovereignty over Dokdo Island made by the Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs in his diplomatic policy speech to the National Assembly this year, which has now become an annual affair, I hereby declare that I, as the Governor entrusted with the safety of Dokdo, will resolutely protect the Island from any provocation on behalf of the three million Gyeongsangbuk-do residents.
2. While emphasizing the importance of its friendship and cooperation with Korea, Japan has continued to engage in treacherous conduct by constantly showing its ambitions to invade Dokdo instead of showing any remorse or reflecting on its attempts to distort history.
