North Gyeongsang Province, which governs Ulleungdo and Dokdo, announced it has cut the 15-year-old sisterhood with Shimane Prefecture, whose council passed the bill.
The provincial government said in a statement that the approval of the ordinance is an act of “invasion” into Dokdo, which is part of Korea historically and by international laws.
The two local communities friendship ties, which was established in October 1989, was severed on the day, and the provincial government said it will prepare another measures to cope with the Dokdo issue.
“We have kept our friendship with Shimane for 15 years, but the prefectural council passed the bill even though we protested and warned it over the ordinance several times. We regard this as a signal that they do not want to keep the relationship, so we announce the severance of our sisterhood,” North Gyeongsang Governor Lee Eui-geun said.
“Dokdo has been North Gyeongsang Provinces treasure and Koreas territory that our ancestors have governed for 1,500 years. Shimane Prefectures action to lay claim to the islets is unprecedented in relations between the local authorities, and is in defiance of Koreas sovereignty,” Lee added.
The province plans to set up countermeasures to strengthen management of Dokdo and expand overseas publicity about Koreas sovereignty over the islets. The measures include establishing a marine research center on Dokdo to conduct studies in the marine life around Dokdo and Ulleungdo.
The local government will also be easing entry procedures to Dokdo, which was regulated to preserve the islets, government-designated Natural Monument No. 336.
