Amid rising anti-Japanese sentiment following Japans claim over the Dokdo islets, the cultural community has organized a series of events to show support for the protection of the islets as sovereign part of the nation’s territory.
For one, the Island Art Culture Institute on Jeju, Seouls Dream Gallery in Seoul, and various civic organizations in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, have worked together to hold a large-scale art exhibition that features images of Dokdo. Starting from Gumi on April 16, the exhibition will travel to a number of cities and regions through June 30.
Gallery All in Insa-dong, central Seoul, is also holding a “Dokdo Love Exhibition” showing 70 works by 33 artists that show the scenic beauties of Dokdo.
A branch of Korea Art Association in North Jeolla Province is also holding a separate display of artworks, titled “Ah! Dokdo Exhibition,” by 50 painters.
On April 4, more than 100 Korean poets paid a visit to the islets in another show of support; they read poems and shared thoughts about the current dispute over the islets.
