Gyeongsangbuk-do has successfully become a home for profitable business operations and is now ready to invite more business enterprises with a business-friendly environment and supporting policies, Governor Lee Eui-geun said.
``We have established industrial complexes and each plays a unique and crucial role in supporting our economy. Foreign companies investing here can benefit from our geographical advantage, technological efficiency and research capabilities,’’ Lee said in an interview. Lee said the province has been playing a pivotal role in the economic achievement of South Korea for the last 40 years, becoming the major member of the ``Miracle on the Han River.’’ Among its most distinguished achievements were the ination and technology complex in Kumi, the steel manufacturing mecca in Pohang, an automobile parts businesses in Kyongju and textiles and machinery complexes in Kyongsan and Chilgok.
``Foreign direct investment into the province has amounted to 5.6 billion for the past five years with our all-out efforts and support,’’ the governor said.
The province has already succeeded in having multinational companies such as Philips from the Netherlands, Thales and Valeo from France, Asahi Glass and Toray from Japan and Corning from the United States.
For their successful operation, the province has left no stone unturned to make the province the best place to do business and to invest by providing various incentives such as cash grants, tax-cut extensions and subsidies for land and facilities, he said.
Lee visited foreign countries to attract investments during his tenure and have various episodes. When he met the officials of Toray, a Japanese chemical and textile firm in March 2003, he struck a chord in the heart of the officials by saying, ``I’m ready to be a member of Toray and that would be a more meaningful job than being governor.’’
Early this year, Toray officials visited the governor’s office with investment packages of 400 million.
Lee said nurturing the future of the industries with well-aimed schemes has been a part of the province’s investment projects. To draw more investments, it has begun to foster Pohang as a hub for nanotechnology and Kumi as a hub for the ination technology and electronics parts businesses. The province is also developing the northern region as a hub for the biotechnology and marine industries based on its long-term plans, Lee said.
``We will continue to do our best to be the most powerful driving force of the Korean economy as well as the global economy,’’ Lee said.
