The Korean Overseas Ination Service (KOIS) in collaboration with the nations largest portal site of Naver will launch an annual campaign for the detection of misnomers of East Sea and Dokdo in the worlds maps May 25-June 25.
The campaign open to foreigners as well as nationals will be held in two events: one, spotting misrepresentation of the two geographical names and then reporting the findings to Navers corner of “Lets catch errors in the deion of East Sea and Dokdo,” and the other involving ion of “honorary error detection members” among the netizens who participated in the month-long campaign.”
Those wanting to take part in the drive are asked to join café.naver.com/correctkorea as a member. Members are required to declare their findings to “Reporting Corner” of the Naver café.
However, errors found in ancient maps, maps published by Japan, newspaper articles and theses and other academic research data made public, along with errors already submitted in the past campaigns, will be excluded from the campaign.
Participants will be in the running for a notebook computer, digital cameras and MP3 players as entry prizes. Recipients of the prizes will be determined by a panel who will judge in terms of the importance of error content, the influence of the Web sites containing the errors and the usability as data for correction. Winners will be announced on July 1.
KOIS will award certificates of honorary error detection membership to netizens who have been positively engaged in error detection activities for more than six months in their capacity as honorary error detection members. The awardees will also be given qualifications to attend major KOIS s.
By running its own error detection team, KOIS has found a total of 1,258 error cases involving East Sea from 867 sites worldwide and taken steps to correct 262 cases out of 213 sites in the year to April. For Dokdo, it spotted 37 cases of error from 29 sites and had eight cases remedied.
Since 2000, KOIS has conducted Internet error detection campaigns every year in a bid to address misrepresentations about Korea on the Internet.
