A globally rare large-scale tumulus with 704 tombs recognized for its unique afterlife view
A foothold for the registration of Gaya Culture as a UNESCO World Heritage has been established following the Silla and Confucian cultures, including the Seokguram, Bulguksa (Temple), and Gyeongju Historic Areas and the Historic Villages of Korea: Hahoe and Yangdong.
Goryeong Jisandong Daegaya Tumuli was designated as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List on the 17th in Paris, France.
The World Heritage Tentative List is an inventory of properties with global conservation value, which each state party hopes will be considered for nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage through sufficient research and data accumulation.
The relics designated at least for a year will gain eligibility for application as UNESCO World Heritage.
Goryeong Jisandong Daegaya Tumuli , registered on the World Heritage Tentative List, is a large-scale tumuli with 704 tombs constructed from 400 B.C to 562, the year of Gaya’s collapse.
It was designated as part of the tentative list due to its historical value, clearly showing the afterlife views and funeral culture of the people of that time (there is no man-made structure within the tumulus, and there is an outer coffin (殉葬槨) for the living who have been buried with the dead), and its eco-friendly artificial landscape.
Compared to the similar tumuli in Korea and other countries, the number and sizes of the Daegaya tumulus mos are superior. Also, the province’s continuing effort for effective cultural-asset management, as evidenced by five large-scale excavations, the creation of precise distribution, and systematic conservation management, was highly uated for relic authenticity and completeness maintenance.
The province of Gyeonsangbuk-do began establishing the promotion plan for the registration of Goryeong Jisandong Daegaya Tumuli in September 2011. Since then, the province has held three conferences to identify the site’s World Heritage value, has conducted a scientific research to promote the tumuli’s registration as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and has conducted various PR activities for the ation of resident consensus. It filed an application with Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA) to nominate the tumuli as a World Heritage Tentative List, and CHA submitted the nomination application to UNESCO at the start of this year, after conducting an onsite survey and holding a Cultural Properties Committee World Heritage ision meeting.
UNESCO finalized the nomination on the 12th, after reviewing the application details, and posted the result on its Website (http://whc.unesco.org) on the 17th.
A total of ten Korean relics are registered as UNESCO World Heritage, nine cultural heritages and one natural heritage. There are a total of 18 cultural properties nominated for inclusion in the tentative list, including Goryeong Jisandong Daegaya Tumuli, Gaya Tumuli of Gimhae•Haman, and Traditional Buddhist Mountain Temples of Korea.
Governor Gwanyong Kim of Gyeongsangbuk-do said, “We will strive to enhance the status of cultural Gyeongsangbuk-do by promoting the excellence of the Gaya cultures internally and externally until the big three cultural areas of Gyeongsangbuk-do — Silla, Confucian, and Gaya — are registered as UNESCO World Heritage sites.”
