“We will study Dokdo ly as proud Gyeongbuk people” -A total of 177 high school students and teachers from the province went on a school excursion and visited Dokdo Academy -
Gyeongsangbuk-do province (Governor Kim Gwan Yong) conducted a Youth Dokdo Academy program for two days and three nights, from Aug. 18 to 20, during which 177 high school students and teachers visited the island.
The field experience program held in Ulleungdo and Dokdo islands targeted the members of the Dokdo guardian club, including those who scored high points in the Dokdo education program, as well as students from low-income and multicultural families who were invited by the Gyeongsangbuk-do Education Office.
The 2016 Youth Dokdo Academy program was implemented along the following schedule: participants held an ing ceremony in the Pohang passenger ship terminal, which was then followed by a special lecture by an invited speaker, an introduction of the Ulleungdo and Dokdo island geo-park, an exploration of the Ulleungdo cultural heritages, a site visit to Dokdo, and a tour of the Dokdo observatory and the Ulleungdo-Dokdo oceanic research post.
On Day 2, in particular, the Golden Bell quiz was held with the theme, “Dokdo, the land of the Republic of Korea,” to revisit the history they learned throughout the excursion, while, on the final day, all the participants were awarded honorary identification cards as Dokdo residents.
Lee Gang Chang, director-general on Dokdo policy, said “The event is believed to help raise the awareness of the students on the nation’s territory in response to Japan’s attempt to distort historical facts in the social studies textbooks for Japanese high school students that were authorized for publication on March 18, and to increase their capability to learn to counter such preposterous claims.”
