Gyeongsangbuk-do and UNWTO s the Silk Road Cultural Forum
In tandem with UNWTO, a major arm of the UN, Gyeongsanbuk-do will hold the International Silk Road Cultural Forum next year. Thus, on November 16, at the new provincial government office in Andong, Governor Kim Kwan-Yong and UNWTO Secretary-General Mr. Taleb Rifai met to sign an MOU. The Silk Road Cultural Forum was proposed by Governor Kim on August 3, when he visited the Eurasia Express event in Berlin, Germany, drawing attention from countries in the Silk Road region and from international organizations. Of these, UNWTO, the organizer of the Silk Road Committee and the Silk Road programs, expressed the most positive interest in the proposal and worked ly with Gyengsangbuk-do, which led to the signing of the aforementioned MOU. Together, Gyeongsangbuk-do and UNWTO will work out the details of the forum with the aim of ing it in the second half of 2016, including coordinating with the participating nations and setting of the agenda and the linked events. The forum will be attended by a large number of personnel, including government officials and representatives of culture and arts circles from 30-40 countries situated along the Silk Road. The forum will also deal with a wide range of other agenda, including the rediscovery of the history of the Silk Road, the promotion of culture and arts exchanges between the Silk Road countries, the development of tourism in the Silk Road region, and the establishment of the cultural community of the Silk Road. In addition, the forum will present the Silk Road Students’ Cultural Festival and other erse events. The two aforementioned organizations will hold the next year and will regularize it while developing it into an international governance organization in the long term. Mr. Rifai said, Since 2011, UNWTO has been organizing the Silk Road Committee and has been conducting erse activities to promote international cooperation and to develop tourism marketing strategies. The International Silk Road Cultural Forum, to be co-organized with Gyeongsangbuk-do, will offer a good opportunity to share such activities. Governor Kim emphasized, “The Silk Road cultural region, where two-thirds of the worlds population live, has not activated its exchange and cooperation efforts. This forum is expected to serve as a catalyst for the promotion of cultural exchanges and joint development within the Silk Road cultural region. Meanwhile, Mr. Rifai, following the visit to the provincial government office, will tour Andong’s tourist destinations, including Hahoe Village, and will stay one night in Andong before participating in Silk Road Gyeongju 2015 on November 17.
