Governor Gwan Yong Kim discusses economic and Saemaeul Movement exchanges with the Ambassador of South Africa in South Korea
Gyeongsangbuk-do expands its exchanges with the Republic of South Africa, its largest trading partner in Africa. Governor Gwan Yong Kim met with Ambassador Nozuko Gloria Bam of South Africa last 27th to broadly discuss further avenues for economic·trade cooperation, the Saemaeul Movement, and future exchanges. The ambassador requested for this meeting to expand his country’s exchanges with Gyeongsangbuk-do. “Gyeongsangbuk-do is the origin of the Saemaeul Movement, a symbol of poverty alleviation, and we hope to learn from its secret in terms of promoting economic development,” said the ambassador. “South Africa is a special country that where Nelson Mandela’s efforts to establish peace and unity had borne fruit,” replied the governor. “I will do my best to support exchanges in various areas, including in education and the Saemaeul Movement.” Gyeongsangbuk-do has been a sister of Northwest State, South Africa since 1998. In 2011, er ambassador Hilton Anthony Dennis visited Gyeongsangbuk-do to discuss the Saemaeul Movement and other areas with Governor Kim. South Africa, having signed an amicable agreement with South Korea in 1992, has since been a trading partner, with its imports from South Korea already amounting to USD2.7 billion. It is South Korea’s largest trading partner in Africa, beyond Egypt (USD2.4 billion) and Angola (KRW2 billion), and many South Korean companies are doing business there, including LG, Daewoo, Samsung, Kia, POSCO, and Hanhwa.
