Gyeongsangbuk-do Province to Build Hanok Hotel in the New Town Stanford Andong Hotel to be completed by 2019, breathing new life into the New Town
A large-scale hanok hotel, which will breathe new life into the new town that is home to the Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Office, will soon rise.
Gyeongsangbuk-do province held a grobreaking ceremony for the Stanford Hotel Andong on Nov. 20. It was participated by over 500 guests, including Governor Kim Gwan Yong, Kwon Joong Kap, chairman of the Stanford Hotel Group, and local residents, in the planned site located in Kagok-ri, Poongcheon-myeon, Andong-si.
The hotel that will built in the provincial office complex is a seven-story (excluding the ment) hotel complete with 113 guest rooms and a 500-seat banquet hall standing on a site measuring 16,965 m2. The ing is planned for 2019.
The province has signed a land purchase contract in May, following the signing of a MOU between the city of Andong and the Stanford Hotel Group in March 2014.
The hotel will be designed in accordance with the development direction of the new town: ‘a culture city brimming with history and tradition’ by incorporating traditional architectural elements, such as Kiwa roof tiles, courtyards, -air floors, and grid pattern s, in line with the spatial elements of a hanok.
Likewise, the hotel will include other facilities aside from providing basic accommodations, such as hallways, rest areas, health clubs (gyms), and banquet halls.
The Stanford Hotel Group, project implementer headquartered in Manhattan, New York City in the United States, is currently running six hotel assets in New York, Seattle, and Portland, as well as in Santiago, Chile, Panama City, Panama, and Sangam-dong, Seoul. It is building three more hotels in Los Angeles, Nampo-dong, Busan, and Tongyeong-si, Gyeongsangnam-do.
The Group is planning to invest a total of KRW 30 billion in Andong-si.
Governor Kim Gwan Yong said, “Once completed, the hotel will provide hotel and convention services that are essential in the establishment of the new town and raise the prestige of the administrative capital. As the site of the hotel is to the new provincial office and the Hominji pond, I am confident that it will emerge as a new landmark in the new town.”
He added that “the hotel is also a boon for the development of tourism in the northern part of the province, as it will attract tourists to erse cultural assets, such as Hahoe Maul, Dosan Seowon, Buseoksa Temple, and Mt. Sobaek. I hope the jobs created in the service industry that is clean and smokestack-free will breathe new life into the new town.”
