39 international students profess their love for Dokdo International students in South Korea expressed their “love for Dokdo” in Korean to attract the people’s attention to the territorial sovereignty issue. The event was the “2017 International Students’ Love for Dokdo Korean Speaking Contest” hosted by Gyeongsangbuk-do and Daegu University and held at Daegu University General Welfare Center’s Small Theater last 26th. Celebrating its 7th anniversary this year, the event invited 39 international students from 11 countries, including Egypt, Kazakhstan, and Vietnam, to talk about Dokdo’s sovereignty and nature in various ats, such as through a play, a speech, and a musical. The international students are ergraduate, graduate, and Korean language course students attending nine colleges nationwide, including Daegu University, Kyungpook National University, Jeonbuk National University, and Korea Polytechnic University. They presented the reality and truths about Dokdo from the perspective of foreigners, and suggested different ways of promoting these abroad, gaining acclaim from the audience. Daegu University’s “PRXP” Team, consisting of students from Mongolia, Sri Lanka, and Egypt, prepared a play about a fisherman living in Dokdo during the Joseon Dynasty who fell into the sea and from there took a time machine to travel to the present time and tell everyone about the history of Dokdo. “While preparing for this contest, I learned that Dokdo is an attractive island with many beautiful stories to tell,” said the leader of the team, Liham (Egypt, 19, exchange student). “I want to introduce it to my friends back in Egypt and travel there with them.” Among the contestants were one second-generation Korean-Japanese national and three international students from Japan. Some teams were applauded by the audience when they appeared in the traditional costumes of their respective homelands. Gyeongsangbuk-do appointed the 39 international students who participated in the main contest “Dokdo Supporters,” and all the students vowed to work as Dokdo supporters aro the world.
