U.S global companies to invest in Gyeongbuk, such as Siemens ultraso diagnostic medical equipment business, expansion of investments in Gyeongbuk, Lam Research, GE Digital, etc.
It was developed to investment activities by attending Consumer Electronics Show(CES) 2019, the world’s largest consumer electronics and electronics exhibition, by Lee Chul-Woo, the Governor moved to Silicon Valley to engage in investment promotion activities, including interviews with Siemens Healthineers, a global medical device company, Lam Research, a semiconductor equipment company, and GE Digital, a software specialist.
Gyeongsangbuk-do and Siemens Healthineers signed an MOU to expand investment in Gyeongbuk on January 10th at the ultrasonic diagnostic business ision of Siemens Healthineers in Silicon Valley, USA. Lee Chul-Woo, the Governor on the day conducted interviews with Mr. Bob Thompson the President of the ultrasonic business ision and Sebastian Funk, the financial officer and signed a Memorandum of erstanding on investment, research and development through mutual cooperation in the field of ultraso diagnostic equipment, and also ensured to actively support the continued development of Siemens Healthineers, which is producing transducers and catheters in Pohang.
Siemens Healthineers is helping healthcare providers aro the world to increase value in expanding precision care, changing care practices, improving patient experiences and digitizing healthcare services.
Siemens Healthineers, a leader in medical technology, is constantly innovating its core product and service portfolio in diagnostic and therapeutic imaging and diagnostic testing medical and molecular diagnostics. It is also actively developing on digital medical services and enterprise services.
Siemens Healthineers recorded €13.4 billion in sales and €2.3 billion in net income for the fiscal year ended September 30, 2018, with approximately 50,000 employees worldwide.
Siemens Healthineers ultraso deevice ision has laboratories in Pohang and Bang, production sites in Pohang, Gyeongju and Seongnam. It is researching and developing the latest technology in cooperation with leading domestic medical institutions and domestic universities such as POSTECH and KAIST. Pohang Techno Park produces ultraso diagnostic equipment such as transducers and catheters (ed tubes that can see the heart through the vein after thigh resection).

He then visited the headquarters of Lam Research, a global semiconductor equipment company and interviewed Mr. Scott Meikle, the Vice-President of Global Customer Operations. Lee Chul-Woo, the Governor introduced the ecosystem of semiconductor equipment industry and manufacturing companies in Gyeongbuk centering on Gumi. He also explained the business cooperation between Lam Research and companies in Gyeongbuk and the joint development of semiconductor equipment, while strongly requesting for investment in the province in the future.
Lam Research, one of the world’s three largest semiconductor equipment companies, has been in continuous development since its foing in Silicon Valley in 1980 and its Korean subsidiary in 1989. The sales in Korea account for about 30% of global sales, and about 12,000 people are working in 16 countries aro the world.
Lee Chul-Woo, the Governor also made a visit to the headquarters of GE Digital, a subsidiary of GE(General Electric), a global company in the aerospace, healthcare, mining, oil, gas and power generation sectors, which supports the ‘digital transation of manufacturing industries’ d on software development and related services.
GE Digital is a pioneer adopter of Digital Twin, and is selling its software plat ‘Predix,’ which is necessary for digital factory operation in the global market.
Through an interview with Caryn Usher, the Executive of GE Digital Operation Center, the Lee Chul-Woo, the Governor have exchanged ideas about building systems that enable companies to create optimized sites in real life by collecting and analyzing large-scale data generated in industrial fields such as power plants, hospitals, auto parts and logistics. They also discussed whether these systems can be applied to manufacturing and medical field in Gyeongbuk.
Lee Chul-Woo, the Governor, who is promoting job creation through business attraction as a major task, said, “From these meetings in Silicon Valley by interviewing 3 global companies including Siemens Healthineers to see these leading companies of the 4th Industrial Revolution are ever seeking to attract investment in Gyeongbuk, and promoted an opportunity for businesses, universities and research institutes in the province to create conditions for collaborating with these companies.”
