Vietnam Saemaeul International Forum at Ho Chi Min University on the 23rd-24th
Gyeongsangbuk-do headed out to share the achievements and challenges of Saemaeul Globalization with international societies, and to seek development strategies and international expansion. Towards this end, Gyeongsangbuk-do held the 2017 Vietnam Saemaeul International Forum at Vietnam National Ho Chi Minh University Grand Auditorium on the 23rd and 24th. The event was held as part of the Ho Chi Minh-Gyeongju World Cultural Expo and invited about 300 officials of Saemaeul Movement institutions, including Jin Woo Park, the special secretary of Gyeongsangbuk-do’s Social and Job Economy, Vice Minister Xhan Tham Nham of the Vietnamese Ministry of Agricultural Development, Vice Mayor Le Thanh Liem of Ho Chi Minh, President Huynh Thanh Dat of Ho Chi Minh University, the mayors and officers of 12 provinces of Vietnam, and representatives of OXFAM (international rescue organization) and P (UN Development Plan). This fourth Saemaeul International Forum held overseas after Senegal, Indonesia, Rwanda, and Tanzania in 2016 was held in Vietnam, along with the expo. Vietnam is currently ing eight pilot cities with the help of Gyeongsangbuk-do and seven cities/towns. To date, 39 volunteer Saemaeul leaders have been dispatched to increase the income and to raise awareness. Last August, Ho Chi Minh University ed Saemaeul Training Center to promote substantial cooperation and strategic partnership between South Korea and Vietnam in relation to the Vietnamese government’s new rural development project. “Gyeongsangbuk-do’s Saemaeul Movement worked to overcome poverty and hunger after the tragedy of war half a century ago, and we hope that it can now contribute to solving the poverty issue and improving the quality of life aro the world,” said Jin Woo Park, the special secretary of Gyeongsangbuk-do’s Social and Job Economy. He added, “Vietnam will certainly create a legend of success, as Korea did, with the active participation of the local government officials and the members of the rural development movements, and with the government’s attention and support.”
