With COVID-19 transitioning from a pandemic to endemic, social distancing directives have been lifted, and Gyeongsangbuk-do has seen a steady rise in tourists at various attractions across the Province.

As of the end of May, 13.84 million tourists visited Gyeongsangbuk-do, an increase of 31% compared to the same period last year. The jump in tourists seems to have been partially affected by in-person festivals hosted since the beginning of May.

This trend is expected to continue as the thirst for tourism and travel, which COVID-19 had been suppressing for the past two years, explodes and once the summer vacation season begins, demand could very well rise even further.

The Provincial Government is hoping to take advantage of this demand for travel and funnel vacationers to Gyeongsangbuk-do with a diverse lineup of unique summer festivals.

To this end, from July to August, a large number of festivals will get under way in Gyeongsangbuk-do at the same time in line for the summer vacation season and welcome tourists, in some cases, for the first time in two years due to COVID-19.

To kick things off, the Bonghwa Sweetfish Festival, a major festival endorsed by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, will begin on June 30.

With its slogan, “Stay cool in Bonghwa! Have fun with Sweetfish,” the Bonghwa Sweetfish Festival will continue until July 7 near Naeseongcheon River in Bonghwa-eup.

A “Mr. Trot” concert will open the Festival at 11:00 am on June 30 as part of the opening ceremony, followed by other summer concert programs (Midsummer Night Small Concert, Busking at the Sweetfish Festival, and Mr. Trot of Bonghwa) throughout the Festival period.

The Festival will also feature activities and immersive events such as the barehand Sweetfish fishing event, char-grilled Sweetfish event, and a Sweetfish local specialty market. Children can play in the sand art sandbox and children’s pool, making the Festival a perfect day out for visitors of all ages.

The organizers have planned the Festival carefully to make sure travelers can enjoy their summer holidays catching Sweetfish and making great memories in the clean and cool waters of Naeseongcheon River.

Meanwhile, on July 5, the Seongju Life Culture Festival will get under way in Seongju.

The Seongju Life Culture Festival (theme: “Life Lives! Rainbow Color Seongju”) ends on July 14.

This Festival, hosted at the Seongju Seongbaksup Forest and Seongju History Theme Park, will feature performances related to the idea of “life” such as the Life Declaration Ceremony, Prenatal Concert, and Dream Festival, as well as delicious oriental melon desserts, a food zone, and an immersive exhibition zone.

The Festival will feature a Healing and Forest Zone for holographic media art exhibitions and a media facade, and also a Summer Vacation Zone with pools and some nice spots to rest and relax.

This year, the organizers have built a festival venue using metaverse technology that offers immersive experiences, games, and events to attract plenty of attraction to the Festival.

On July 27, Ulleungdo is expected to go ahead with its Squid Festival.

This Festival, which is a three-day event (ends on July 29) at the Jeodong Port on Ulleungdo Island, will start at 7:30 pm on July 27, with a Squid Concert and fireworks.

In addition to the concert, various programs such as the Squid Triathlon, Barehand Squid Fishing, and a Squid Cook-off will add to the festivities. Not only that, Ulleungdo is planning on hosting a “Pimaek” (Pidaegi and beer) party, which had been popular in previous years, to welcome guests to the Island.

Although these festivals are some of the most notable events this summer, there are a number of other unique festivals coming to Gyeongsangbuk-do in July and August,

Gumi is hosting the Ramyun and Camping Festival focused on ramen noodles - a popular snack for all Koreans - on July 27 and 28, whereas Bonghwa is hosting a month-long Midsummer Santa Village Festival from July 23 to August 21.

The Bongja (native flower of Bonghwa) Festival will welcome visitors between July 28 to August 7, while the Pet Concert in Cheongdo will invite guests on August 6. Together, these unique and entertaining festivals are expected to keep travelers entertained throughout the hot summer nights this year.

The Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor said, We have prepared a variety of festivals for vacationers who are looking for somewhere cool to get them out of the sweltering summer heat.” He added, “I hope that everyone can spend their vacations in the safety and comfort of Gyeongsangbuk-do, which is the best place to rest and recharge your body and mind depleted from the ongoing effects of COVID-19, and create some great memories to take home.”
