Washington DC-area residents will be able to take a virtual trip to one of Koreas most distinctive regions, Gyeongsangbuk-do (South Gyeongsang Province), through a new exhibit and welcoming reception with activities on Wednesday, May 6 at the Korean Embassys KORUS House.
Although it is possible to drive from coast to coast across the Republic of Korea within a fraction of a day, it is hardly a homogenous span: the countrys regional diversity extends back hundreds of years, and many provinces tout their own unique character and culture.
The free public event, sponsored by the Gyeongsangbuk-do provincial government, will include a variety of the regions traditional arts: delayed dyeing craft demonstrations, Jangsung wood carving (statues erected to ward of harmful spirits), a Korean tea ceremony, paper making (Hanji), and a display of traditional wooden masks from the town of Andong.
Gyeongsangbuk-do is also unique for its administrative control of Dokdo, the rocky islets in the East Sea that are Koreas easternmost territory and an emotional source of pride for many of the countrys citizens. The May 6 event will include a special introduction to Dokdo and the neighboring island of Ulleungdo.
