Daegu Regional Environmental Office announced on Jan. 21 the results of survey on ecosystem in Dokdo. The survey was conducted for three times from April 2008 to October 200 for the conservation of ecosystem in the islets.
□ Researchers from Gyeongju University led by Professor Lim Won Hyun participated in the survey and investigated 7 areas including marine invertebrate.
□ The results show that Dokdo is the habitat for 51 species of plants, 45 species of birds, 71 species of insects and 70 species in 6 phyla of marine invertebrate.
□ A total of 30 species (5 species of birds such as Lanius bucephalus, Alcedo atthis, Erithacus akahige, Mergus serrator and Phalaropus lobatus, 21 species of insects including Trigonotylus ruficornis, Hemerobius humulinus and Scymnus babai Sasaji, and 4 species of marine invertebrate such as Aplysia sagamiana Baba, Aplysia(Varria) extraordinaria, Patelloida (Chiazacmea) pygmaea signata (Pilsbry), and Aurelia aurita) wereidentified as new species which have not been found in literature search.
□ In the case of flora in Dokdo, there was no big difference between the outcome of the latest survey and that of 2007 survey, but near the top of the western islet of Dokdo, researchers found a colony of plants that they suppose are Elaeagnus macrophylla Thunb. They also identified 27 species of plants that came from outside the islets, such as Brassica juncea Cosson, Portulaca oleracea, Bromus catharticus Vah, and Achyranthes japonica (Miq.) Nakai. The 27 species of plants are classified on the basis of literature review and others.
