The fifth Gyeongju World Culture Expo (GWC) will begin in September with upgraded cultural events prepared by 35 participating countries. On the theme “Millennium Light, Millennium Window,” the Gyeongju Expo will be held from Sept. 7 to Oct. 26 at a central park in the Gyeongsangnam-do (South Gyeongsang Province) city known as a “museum without walls.” Gyeongju, the capital of the Silla Dynasty (57 B.C.-A.D. 935), previously held a joint cultural expo with Cambodias Angkor Wat from Nov. 2006 to Jan. 2007 to mark the tenth anniversary of diplomatic recognition between Korea and Cambodia. The expo attracted reporters from the BBC and CNN. And while 300,000 visitors were targeted, as of Jan. 4, 319,000 had attended. Perances, cultural experiences, exhibitions To lift the festive mood, various cultural experiences, exhibitions and perances are to be staged at the upcoming event. The Gyeongju Expo organizing committee sought to revive the spirit of the lost dynasty. Among the most striking features of the grounds are the 560,000 square-meter Silla Wanggyeong Forest and the 17-story, glass and aluminum Gyeongju Tower, a modern building with a cut away center in the shape of Hwangryongsa Temples famed nine-story, wooden pagoda, which was destroyed in 1238 during the Mongol invasion. Above the Gyeongju Tower, engraved in gold-plate on top the tower is a sign reading “Millennium Light, Millennium Window.” The tower is intended for cultural and social activities and includes an observatory, sky lounge and laser show. Cultural events such as the Silla Garden LOHAS Festival, World Puppet Theater and International Pering Art Festival are to be held along with film screenings and light shows. The World 3-D Film Festivals and Digital Korean Culture Heritage Exhibition will run in conjunction with the expo. The Gyeongju Expo will present a new paradigm for world culture festivals by jointly exhibiting traditional and modern culture, analogue and digital products, and nature and high technology through advanced facilities and various programs.
