On November 27 (Friday) at
2:30pm, the Gyeongsangbuk-do Government and the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Free Economic Zone Authority held the grobreaking ceremony for Phase 2 of the Gyeongsan Knowledge Industry District project. The ceremony was attended by Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-woo, Gyeongsan-si Mayor Choi Young-jo, National Assembly Member Yoon Doo-hyun, members of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Council and the Gyeongsan City Council, and local representatives.
The Gyeongsan Knowledge Industry District is an industrial complex built on a 3,830,000 m2 area in Sowol-ri, Wachon-myeon, and Daehak-ri, Hayang-eup in Gyeongsan by Gyeongsan Knowledge Industry Development, Co., Ltd. The first phase of this two-phase project is showing smooth progress with a completion rate of 98%. From this, 80% of the industrial sites in the complex have been sold (140 resident businesses), and the district hosts six national projects. In addition, the compensation process for lands expropriated for Phase 2 is well on its way.

Phase 2 of the project (built on a 980,000 m2) will primarily host high-tech medical devices and new materials businesses. The project also includes commercial facilities and houses for enhanced convenience for resident businesses. It is expected that the project will boost the local economy by attracting promising businesses in the post–COVID-19 era and expand job opportunities for young job seekers. Moreover, the project is forecast to present the area with an opportunity to become the center of innovation-driven growth and balanced development.
The Gyeongsan Knowledge Industry District is the largest free economic zone in Gyeongsangbuk-do with excellent transportation and human resource infrastructure. Located 5 km away from the Cheongtong-Wachon Interchange, the district offers access to the Daegu Pohang Expressway and Daegu Metro Line 1, which is scheduled for an extension. It is also surroed by key industrial hubs in the Yeongnam region (Gumi, Pohang, Ulsan, and Changwon).
The district is supported by an excellent human resource infrastructure provided by the area’s industries, universities, and research centers, which produce 120,000 workforces trained by 12 universities in the Gyeongsan region. In addition, the district is located near the Gyeongbuk Techno Park, the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH), and other prestigious research centers.
In his speech at the ceremony, Governor Lee Cheol-woo commented, “Located on the auto industry belt connecting Daegu, Pohang, and Ulsan, Phase 1 of the Gyeongsan Knowledge Industry District project achieved resoing success by recording a progress rate of 98% (with 80% of industrial sites sold). Now, Phase 2 is also progressing smoothly. Currently, 70% of the compensations for the expropriated lands have been paid. My sincere gratitude goes to local residents for their cooperation and support.” He also added, “To improve the business environment in Gyeongsangbuk-do, we will ly work with the Gyeongsan City Government and other related organizations to complete the project as early as possible, and spare no administrative and financial support to attract businesses and create jobs.”
