The Korean defense industry, which, until only 50 years ago, used to bring in used weapons from powerful countries for operation, now nurtures a grand dream in Gumi, Gyeongsangbuk-do.
Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gumi City have announced that Hanwha Systems, the nation’s top defense electronics company, signed an agreement to invest KRW 200 billion in Gumi by 2024 at a ceremony held at Gumi City Hall on October 12.
The event was attended by Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-woo, Gumi City Mayor Kim Jang-ho, Hanwha Systems CEO Eoh Sung-chul, and National Assembly member Kim Yeung-shik, among others.
Hanwha Systems is a company that supplies state-of-the-art radar systems for the country’s next-generation fighters “KF-21” and “Cheongung II,” often dubbed the Korean equivalent of the US Patriot missile defense system. Taking this investment agreement as an opportunity, Hanwha Systems will move its business site at Samsung Electronics SMART City Campus 1 in Gumi, which it had been renting, to the larger area of the er Hanwha Gumi Plant.
Hanwha Systems plans to hire aro 250 new employees and make a bold investment, enough to be called the “Second Foation of the company.”
Hanwha Business Group’s defense affiliates, including Hanwha Systems, play a pivotal role in K-defense to the extent that they are ranked in the top 30* of the world’s top 100 defense companies.
*According to Global Defense News, Korea Aerospace Industries Ltd. (KAI) ranked 59th, and LIG Nex1 placed 62nd.
In a press conference held last August to mark his first 100 days in office, President Yoon Suk-yeol declared that the country would become a defense powerhouse, setting the goal of becoming one of the world’s top four weapons exporters.
In line with this development, Gyeongsangbuk-do signed a memorandum of erstanding (MOU) with LIG Nex1 for an investment worth KRW 110 billion on September 28. As Hanwha Systems has joined this investment relay in Gyeongsangbuk-do, the future of K-defense is shaping up in Gumi.
According to the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade (KIET), a national policy research institute er the Prime Minister’s Office, the country’s defense exports have already reached an all-time high of USD 10 billion this year.
Furthermore, if the country’s defense exports, including its bid to supply Redback armored vehicles to Australia, continue to go smoothly, the country’s defense exports are expected to reach up to USD 20 billion this year, bringing it a step r to becoming the world’s fourth-largest defense exporter after the United States, Russia, and France.
Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gumi aim to attract the defense innovation cluster.
Gyeongsangbuk-do is considered the optimal location for a defense innovation cluster, as weapons systems companies representing the domestic defense industry, including Hanwha Systems, LIG Nex1, and Poongsan, as well as aro 250 small and medium-sized defense enterprises and venture firms, are centered in Gumi, the nation’s largest production for guided weapons and ammunition.
“As LIG Nex1 and Hanwha Systems, the two pillars of K-defense, have made large-scale investments in Gumi, the city’s hosting of a defense innovation cluster has become an irreversible trend,” said Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-woo. “Gyeongsangbuk-do will lead efforts to make the country the world’s fourth-largest defense exporter.”
