Gyeongsangbuk-do announced that the Korean Mask Dance (Talchum), Naebanggasa, and Samguk Yusa are considered likely candidates to be listed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and Memory of the World in the Asia-Pacific, respectively.

Barring any extenuating circumstances, Korean Mask Dance is expected to become listed as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity at the 17th Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee Meeting (November 28th ~ December 3rd, Morocco) given the recommendation for inion from the uating body of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (Intangible Heritage Committee). has already been filed at UNESCO.

Naebanggasa and Samguk Yusa are also expected to become listed at the 9th UNESCO Memory of the World Committee for the Asia-Pacific (MOWCAP) General Assembly, which gets under way in Andong from November 24 to 26 (three days).

The fact that Korea is hosting this year’s General Meeting is considered a good sign for listing, yet authorities will likely focus on creating a favorable environment for all three cultural heritage resources until the final decision has been made.

Home to five out of the thirteen UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites in Korea (38%), Gyeongsangbuk-do is not only a treasure trove of ary heritages such as the Confucian Printing Woodblocks in Korea (Memory of the World), Name Boards and Verse Plaques on Royal Architecture of the Joseon Dynasty as well as the Maninso: Ten Thousand People’s Petitions (both Memory of the World Regional Registers), but also a hotbed for our nation’s future cultural heritage.

Moreover, among the eighteen mask dances identified as Korean Mask Dances are the Andong Hahoe Byeolsingut Talnori, a national intangible cultural property, and Yecheon Cheongdan Noreum, an intangible cultural property of Gyeongsangbuk-do.

If Naebanggasa and Samguk Yusa are also ary heritage resources with close ties to the region, which means that their induction into the Memory of the World APAC Regional Register can help establish Gyeongsangbuk-do as the center of Koreas World Heritage Sites, both in quality and quantity.

In particular, if Korean Mask Dance is registered as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Hahoe Village, which has preserved and performed the Hahoe Byeolsingut Talnori in Andong, will become a bona fide History Village with all three types of UNESCO heritage resources - UNESCO World Heritage, UNESCO Memory of the World, and UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

It will be a monumental achievement as such a case is rare to find across the globe.

Gyeongsangbuk-do plans to direct extra attention to the preservation, management, and utilization of its World Heritage sites in order to live up to its reputation as the region in Korea with the largest number of World Heritage sites.

Also, to keep pace with changes brought on by the 4th industrial revolution, Gyeongsangbuk-do is leading the digital transformation the Province needs using cutting-edge technology and it is making a concerted effort with local stakeholders to host the National World Heritage Center within the region.

The Director of the Culture, Tourism, and Sports Bureau at the Gyeongsangbuk-do Office said, The successful listing of our traditional heritage resources at UNESCO is evidence that people around the world now recognize their value and excellence as historical and cultural resources. He added, We will continue to discover, preserve, and develop excellent cultural heritage so that Gyeongsangbuk-do can emerge as a hub for K-culture.
