Gyeongsangbuk-do is ready to host a string of festivals as soon as the calendar flips to September. In September alone, 17 festivals will get under way in various cities and counties across the Province.

The Provincial Government is hoping to stimulate the local economy by bringing holidaymakers to these festivals in each city/county and helping them enjoy the cool and crisp autumn air of Gyeongsangbuk-do.

“Samgang” means “three rivers” - the Nakdonggang River, which winds its way around Hahoe in Andong, Naeseongcheon River, which snakes through Hoeryongpo, and Geumcheon River, which flows in from Mungyeong. Traditionally, Samgang has been home to the Samgang Inn that served hungry sailors who would sail up and down the three rivers during the Joseon Dynasty, and aspiring Confucian scholars and aristocrats on their way to take the national exam.

The Yecheon Samgang Inn is expected to be bustling with people during the Chuseok holiday with people visiting their hometowns nearby and others traveling on vacation. The Yecheon Sam Gang Festival begins at the Samgang Cultural Complex and Hancheon Sports Park on September 10, which is right in the middle of the Chuseok holiday, and runs through until October 12.

This year, Yecheon-gun plans to do away with the festival’s official opening ceremony altogether, and fill its calendar entirely with various immersive programs and a family-friendly Mokkoji (picnic) event under the theme of “Samgang Naru, where stars fall, so stay for a while.”

Yecheon will offer seven immersive programs (available eight times a day): traditional straw crafts (e.g. egg bunch, coasters, etc.), Samgang Inn gel candle crafts, Chuseok Songpyeon making, etc. at the Bobusang Culture Village inside the Samgang Cultural Complex.

50% of all tickets will be available for booking in advance with the remaining 50% set aside for walk-on tourists.

Meanwhile, the Mokkoji program will be limited to 50 families per day. No walk-on tickets will be available for the Mokkoji program. Reservations can be made through the Naver Store until August 30.

Aside from these immersive programs, Yechon-gun will host various events such as traditional Korean music concerts, invitational performances by singers, and a Bobusang program (wearing gear used by Bobusang peddlers) to entertain the eyes and ears of travelers returning home and tourists.

On September 23, the Pohang International Fire and Light Festival gets under way.

This Festival (theme: “Land of Hope, Pohang!”) is expected to entertain guests for three days near the Hyeongsangang River Sports Park. A multimedia show with mesmerizing lasers, water screens, and lights will begin immediately after the Festival’s opening ceremony at 6:00 pm on September 23.

Also, multiple art groups and teams will be invited and selected to compete in a contest to be a part of the largest fire and lights parade in Korea.

At 8:00 pm on September 24, the grand finale will feature a fireworks show organized together by teams from the Philippines, Italy, Sweden, and Korea.

Meanwhile, on September 29, the “Andong Maskdance Festival,” an honorary cultural tourism festival designated by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, will also get under way in Gyeongsangbuk-do. This year, the Festival organizers are planning to introduce some sweeping changes that could transform the Festival.

The biggest change is a new vision to create a Festival that encourages the participation of locals and also stimulates the local economy by holding most of the Festival’s events in the old town area of Andong, and away from the Talchum Park, which was used in previous years.

Starting with an opening ceremony on the special stage set up in Gyeongdong-ro (in front of Homeplus’ Andong branch) at 6:00 pm on September 30, the Festival (theme: “Hero Returns in Chaos World”) will begin on the same day as the Andong Folk Festival. The Maskdance Festival ends on October 3 (five days).

Various events, including Korean and international maskdance performances, a maskdance contest, and maskdance “Daedong Nanjang” are all planned as part of the Festival. Other performances will also be available at other local tourist attractions such as the special market busking stage, the Hahoe Village, and near Wolyeonggyo Bridge.

Also in September, Gyeongsangbuk-do will host the Traditional Liquor and Alcoholic Beverage Culture Festival (September 2~3) at Wolyeonggyo Bridge in Andong, the 2022 World Heritage Festival (September 3~25) at Andong and Yeongju, and the Gyeongsan Gatbawi Wish-fulfillment Festival (September 24~25).

The Director of the Culture, Tourism, and Sports Bureau at the Gyeongsangbuk-do Office said, “We have the Chuseok holiday coming up in September, which means plenty of people will be coming home and families will visit Gyeongsangbuk-do on vacation.” He added, “We are hoping our local festivals can help improve the reputation of tourism in Gyeongsangbuk-do and stimulate the tourism industry. Please visit Gyeongsangbuk-do this autumn for our festivals, and take home some great memories.”
