Gyeongsangbuk-do unequivocally declares Dokdo Island a sovereign territory of Korea citing historical facts, geography, and international law!
- Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-Woo demands Shimane Prefecture to abolish its so-called Takeshima Day ordinance and suspend the Takeshima Day event -

On February 22 (Wednesday), the Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Government, along with its constituency, strongly condemned Shimane Prefecture, Japan, to immediately suspend its Takeshima Day event, which the Prefecture has hosted for the past 18 years, and to withdraw all claims it has made regarding Dokdo Island, which is the rightful sovereign territory of Korea.

Governor Lee Cheol-Woo of Gyeongsangbuk-do issued a statement condemning Shimane Prefecture, demanding an immediate abolition of measures such as its Takeshima Day ordinance that could jeopardize the healthy cooperative relations between Korea and Japan.

Meanwhile, Gyeongsangbuk-do launched a series of countermeasures to protect Dokdo Island from the ongoing threats made by Japan. The Gyeongsangbuk-do Dokdo Commission and Gyeongsangbuk-do Public-Private Joint Task Force for the Peaceful Administration of Dokdo Island investigated current issues in Korea-Japan relations and explored possible countermeasures to suggest the direction in which Gyeongsangbuk-do should aim its policies to work peacefully with Japan in governing the Island.

The Commission and Joint Task Force also responded aggressively to Shimane Prefectures latest actions surrounding Dokdo Island via its K-Dokdo website, the Cyber Strategy Center for Dokdo Island, along with other online activities via social media, YouTube, and Facebook to protect Dokdo Island. A booklet proving that Dokdo is indeed a Korean sovereign territory, Maps tell the true story of Dokdo Island, was published and distributed to raise awareness of the issue as well.

Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-Woo said, As the Provincial Governor tasked with governing Dokdo Island, I have made it clear time and again both at home and abroad that Dokdo Island has historically been and continues to be the sovereign territory of Korea under international law. The Governor added, Japan must apologize to the Republic of Korea and its people for attempting to distort history, earnestly reflect on its mistakes, and strive for world peace.
