Gyeongsangbuk-do, in collaboration with the University Metaverse Association (hereinafter referred to as UNIMETA), is launching a new youth culture event, the Christmas Metaverse Playground, on the global metaverse platform Minecraft* on December 23.
*Minecraft is a renowned metaverse game where users can collect materials, produce items, build structures, and engage in economic activities with their own avatars in an infinitely expandable 3D world.

More than 300 students from 22 universities in the United States, Japan, Canada, and Korea are expected to participate in this 4-day special event, which closes at midnight on December 26, and celebrate Christmas this year at the Gyeongbuk Christmas Village.

Most notably, the Gyeongbuk Christmas Village will feature six landmark tourist attractions across Gyeongsangbuk-do, the Mecca of metaverse world-building in Korea, on the metaverse platform to help visitors enjoy the event and interact with other attendees free from conventional time and space restrictions.

Content for all six tourist attractions - the Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Government Office, a venue to promote and advertise Gyeongsangbuk-do as the Mecca of metaverse technology in Korea; the Buncheon Santa Village at Buncheon Station in Bonghwa-gun, which is famous as a K-Christmas village; the Hahoe Village in Andong-si, widely considered the epitome of Korean spiritual culture; Cheomseongdae in Gyeongju-si, the oldest astronomical observatory in East Asia; Dokdo Island in Ulleung-gun, the most beautiful island in Korea; Homigot Square in Pohang, the easternmost tip of the Korean Peninsula - were designed and produced by students participating in the event.

Users visiting the metaverse platform can do so much more than simply visit these destinations. They can use their own avatars to enjoy a variety of Christmas content, communicate with other university/college students as well as young people across the country, and create secondary content such as photos and videos.

During the event, individuals and groups can also enjoy different Christmas mini-games such as Snow Fighter, Santa Riding, Hunt, and the Maze Game.

Metaverse items and goods picked up during these games will be donated to a virtual asset fundraising event for Christmas, which will go to youth creator festivals Gyeongsangbuk-do expects to host in the future.

In particular, between 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm on December 23, the Christmas Metaverse Playground Opening Event will get under way with Runchiz, metaverse creator from Gyeongsangbuk-do, via YouTube.*

The opening event will feature a variety of programs, including a Christmas carol performance, a raffle, a celebratory photo shoot, a dance party, fireworks, and a public relations session outlining the achievements and future plans for Meta Gyeongbuk.

Lee Cheol-Woo, Governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do, said, I am excited to meet talented individuals in the Metaverse field who will help lead Korea’s future. The Governor added, My administration plans to offer its full support so that young adults across the province can realize their potential and dreams.

Going forward, Gyeongsangbuk-do plans to promote various youth support projects using metaverse platforms, such as the Youth Metaverse Creative Festival and the International Youth Metaverse Conference.
